As we gather with our loved ones this Fourth of July to celebrate the 249th birthday of our nation, let us take a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey of our country and the sacrifices that have made our freedom possible. We cannot forget the invaluable contributions of our National Guard, whose members have dedicated their lives to protecting us.
The roots of our National Guard reach back as far as 1636, when brave individuals in the Massachusetts Bay Colony came together to form the first militia regiments. These men and women selflessly set aside their daily lives to answer the call of duty, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. For nearly four centuries, they have embodied the spirit of the Citizen Soldier, stepping up whenever our country needs them—whether in times of crisis at home or in service overseas. Their unwavering dedication and willingness to sacrifice are a testament to their commitment to safeguarding our communities and our nation, and we honor that.
In times of need, we rally together. The unique dual mission of our National Guard, serving both federal and state roles, equips them to face foreign adversaries while also protecting our communities from civil unrest and natural disasters. They truly embody the spirit of the Minuteman, always prepared to act for the greater good.
It’s also important to remember and cherish the sacrifices made by our families and friends throughout our nation’s history. Their love and support enable our National Guardsmen to leave everything behind and step into harm’s way. We acknowledge the strength it takes for both the service members and their families to bear this burden.
As we enjoy the fireworks lighting up the sky this Fourth of July, let us take a moment to honor every Guardsman from 1636 to today—each individual who has willingly chosen to serve and protect our nation at all costs.
