To change timeline requirements for the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) Beneficiary Guide, currently it states the member “must be eligible to be retained for four (4) years from the date of your election to transfer benefits, and not be precluded from serving for four more years prior to approval of your election by policy or statute”. I believe there is an issue with this and would like to ask for assistance in a policy change. This is a Department of the Defense (DoD), Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) issue, but I am looking for assistance, and have already contacted my Congressman, Congressman Bentz to ask for his assistance as well. An option I propose is to
-Keep the 4 year eligibility for the benefit of retention and recruiting to the military
-After 20 years of Satisfactory Service (not Total Active Federal Military Service) the requirement be 2 years of eligibility
-After 22 years of Satisfactory Service (not Total Active Federal Military Service) there is no requirement years of eligibility
I don’t believe this is a huge ask…I am at 21 years of Total Active Federal Military Service with 25 years of Satisfactory Service, and because I did not know there was eligibility requirements until I transferred benefits to my spouse and children, I am required to serve until 2027, with my current enlistment to expire in 2026. I feel a member serving 20+ years to their country, shouldn’t have this worry added to their plate, it could be an easy fix that could be helpful for military members in Active Duty, Guard and Reserves. Thank you for your time, if needed I can be reached at zackariah.stone.1@us.af.mil, the work phone listed below, or my personal cell 541-539-9284.
